The Granbury Marine Corps JROTC rifle team placed fourth at the National JROTC Championship on March 17-19, 2016, in Anniston, Alabama.  The national-level contest featured the best JROTC units from all service branches.

 

Granbury High School was represented by Cody Bogle, Trinity Hathaway, Freeman Hawker, Kayla Hitshew, and Katherine Lambert in the 3×20 air rifle event, which featured competitors firing twenty record shots from three positions: prone, standing and kneeling over the two-day period.

 

The Granbury team shot 4645 out of a possible 4800 points placing them fourth in the all-service category and third among Marine Corps teams.  Bogle led the team with a personal best of 1179 out of 1200 possible points, winning the bronze medal as an individual shooter.  The squad claimed a $750 prize, while Bogle received a $300 check for his third-place finish.

 

“I’m are very proud of this group of athletes and their accomplishments.  When you put it into perspective, our cadets are the best out of over seven thousand shooters – that is a remarkable achievement,” commented Lt. Col. Scott Casey, the Senior Marine Instructor.  “I’m also impressed on how well they did as a team moving up five slots in the national rankings.  Last year, they placed ninth in the nation, and now they are fourth.  I think next near we will have a shot at the overall championship.”

 

Bogle and Hitshew also received their Junior Distinguished Badge, which is bestowed to school-age junior three-position air rifle shooters who distinguish themselves by attaining a series of high rankings in designated major competitions.

 

“I’m very proud of Cadets Bogle and Hitshew receiving their badges,” Casey commented.  “That is similar to receiving their high school All-American in the shooting world – a first for Granbury High School JROTC program.”
