GHS RIFLE TEAM COMPETES AT JROTC SERVICE CHAMPIONSHIPS
February 22, 2017

Granbury High School JROTC rifle team members excelled at the U.S.
Marine Corps Service Championship held February 9-11, 2017, in Las Vegas. The cadets
placed fourth to earn a national bid.
Kayla Hitshew led the team and shot a personal best making finals with
the top eight shooters to finish in fourth place among all Marine Corps cadets.
The event was a 3×20 air rifle event, with competitors firing twenty record
shots from the three positions of prone, standing, and kneeling over the two-day
contest.
“We are very proud of this team and their accomplishments,”
commented Lt. Col. Scott Casey, the Senior Marine Instructor. “When you put it into perspective, our kids
are the best out of over 8,000 shooters.
That is an amazing achievement.”
In addition to Hitshew, GHS was represented by Trinity Hathaway,
Clarissa Layland, Tamara Peters, Brittney Pinckard, and Elizabeth Plecity.
Newcomers Peters and Layland placed ninth and eleventh
respectively. “That is unprecedented and
is a true testament on how well they performed under the pressure at a national
match.”
At the competition, high school cadets from Army, Navy, Marine
Corps and Air Force JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) meet on the
firing line to complete a journey that has been months in the making. Over
8,025 junior shooters participated in the CMP Postal Competition in October,
with the highest-scoring shooters in each branch qualifying for the service
championships.
The team’s next competition is February
24-25 as GHS will host the Air Rifle Junior Olympics. The National JROTC Championship will be
March 23-25 in Anniston, Alabama.
