Granbury Marine Corps JROTC rifle team members excelled at the regional championships held March 30-April 1, 2017, in Anniston, Alabama.

Granbury Team One placed second, while Granbury Team Two placed sixth among all precision teams and qualified to compete at a national competition at Camp Perry, Ohio in June.

Sophomore Makenize Sheffield led the Granbury cadets and shot a personal best making finals (top 8 shooters) and ending in second place overall.  Others representing Granbury High School were Trinity Hathaway, Allison Henry, Kayla Hitshew, Clarissa Layland, Tamara Peters, Brittney Pinckard, and Elizabeth Plecity.

“It’s always disappointing not winning after you’ve put in the hard work, but this team is very capable of performing at a high level and does,” commented Lt. Col. Scott Casey, the Senior Marine Instructor.  “Second place at the regionals is very impressive, and nationals this summer will be a great opportunity to prove themselves again.”

All junior three-position air rifle clubs, including American Legion, 4-H and junior rifle clubs and JROTC units participated in a national postal air rifle match sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program from October 2016 to January 2017. The results of this postal competition gave teams a national ranking, and the top competitors – as well as top qualifiers from State Championships – qualified for the regional events.
