Brawner Flag Parade

Granbury ISD students began saluting veterans during the week of November 4, 2019, ahead of Veterans Day.

Brawner Intermediate School students heard from two staff members – fifth grade teacher Julie Sellers and security guard Jameson Parker – about their experiences while serving in the U.S. Army.  Students also held a flag parade following the ceremony.  Likewise, Oak Woods first graders presented a special music program to honor both veterans and America.

At STARS Accelerated High School, students met Fiske Hanley, a 99-year-old World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a flight engineer on a B-29 Superfortress.  Hanley was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese after his plane was shot down in March 1945.

Granbury Marine Corps JROTC

In addition, the Granbury Marine Corps JROTC has presented colors at numerous school and community events.

Several events will be held at GISD schools on Monday, November 11.  A community celebration organized by the City of Granbury and a local steering committee will be held at 11:00 A.M. in the Granbury High School auditorium.  Included in the program are the GHS Choi and JROTC.

Keynote speaker will be Colonel Jerry K. “Kenny” Weldon II, USAF (Ret.). Col. Weldon is the Commandant of the Corps of Cadets at Tarleton State University, where he leads the John Tarleton Leadership Academy. The colonel retired from active duty military service, following more than 26 years as an Air Force civil engineer officer.

An afternoon parade through Historic Downtown Granbury will follow the ceremony at 2:00 P.M.  In addition to the JROTC, scheduled to participate are the GHS Pirate Band, GHS Cheerleaders, GHS Stowaways, and GHS student council.

Other school events happening on November 11 include a musical program by Acton Elementary School fourth graders at 7:30 A.M., a veterans recognition program at Emma Roberson Elementary School at 9:30 A.M., and a program at Granbury Middle School at 6:00 P.M.

GISD students regularly participate in the community-organized events to honor both Veterans Day and Memorial Day.
