GHS RIFLE TEAM WINS JOSHUA COVID CLASSIC
December 16, 2020
Granbury Marine Corps JROTC rifle team members won the COVID Classic CMP Cup Match on December 11, 2020, at Joshua High School.
Two Granbury High School squads placed first and fifth in the first traveling competition of the season.
Kaylynn Slaughter led the way with a season-high score of 591, placing second individually among over thirty shooters. Ashton Arlington was fourth with a season-high 586, Sunee Schuman was fifth with 585, and Sara Folsom was eighth with 584. The squad of Slaughter, Arlington, Folsom, and Alexis DeLaPena placed first in the team category to best a field of ten teams with a season-high score.
“This was a great start for our first away match,” commented Lt. Col. Scott Casey, the Senior Marine Instructor. “We lost some great shooters last year due to graduation, but I’m impressed with how the underclassmen have stepped up this year. Shooting a season high was fun to watch.”
Casey continued, “Freshman standout Candince McGrath is one to watch as a first-year shooter. Likewise, freshman Kameron Wells is another newcomer to the team who shot a personal best in her first away match.”
Additional cadets participating in the match were Julia Czernik, Tye Foster, Jonathan Hutchison, and Caroline Martin.
“We have a deep bench this year and that is exciting to have new members of the squad shooting very high scores in their first match,” Casey said.
The GHS rifle team returns to action on December 15 with the JROTC qualifying postal match on the team’s home range at the high school.
