The GHS Pirate Band took to the field at Pirate Stadium to preview the fall marching show “What the World Needs…” for parents and the community on August 19, 2021.
The performance included the drill and music for the first movement, which includes “Mad World” by Roland Orzabal and first performed by Tears for Fears, “Paint It Black” by Mick Jagger and Keith Richard and performed by the Rolling Stones, “Requiem, Dies irae” by Giuseppe Verdi.” The band also performed music from the second movement including “What World Needs Now Is Love” by Burt Bacharach and “Pure Imagination” by Anthony Newley. Other music, drill, and props will be added in the next few weeks.
Band members are looking forward to a full competition season, which was cancelled during 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Students will first compete at the Mansfield Preview of Champions on Saturday, September 25 followed by a trip to Midland for the Bands of America West Texas Regional on Saturday, October 2. UIL region marching contest will be Tuesday, October 12 at Saginaw Chisholm Trail High School; bands that earn a Divison I superior rating will advance to area on Saturday, October 23 at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletics Complex. The band will also compete at BOA Super Regionals on Saturday, November 6 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Alex Call, Maddie Purvis, and Katelyn Sukampo are the senior drum majors, joined by junior Saphyre Sneed. Also serving in band leadership positions are color guard captains Abigail LeBlanc and Katie Wren. For the Pirate Drumline, Carolina Garcia is battery captain and Sully Brown is pit captain.
The band is under the direction of Mark Eastin, Katelyn Johnson, Alan Olmos, and Tahlequah Kirk. Maggie Meroney is the colorguard instructor. Also supporting the high school program are Acton Middle School directors April Page and Stephanie Bosch and Granbury Middle School directors Michele Kahne and Ben Holmes.
