The GHS Pirate Band earned a Division I rating at the UIL region marching contest on October 12, 2021, at Saginaw High School.
The “What the World Needs…” marching show received the top rating from all three judges, who evaluated both Class 5A and 6A groups in Region 30 of the Texas Music Educators Association. The rating allows the band to advance to area competition on Saturday, October 23 at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletic Complex.
The marching ensemble also earned high marks at the Bands of America West Texas Regional Championship on October 2, advancing to finals in field of mostly Class 6A groups. Granbury also competed at the Mansfield Preview of Champions on September 25.
A community performance with seventh and eighth graders from Acton Middle School and Granbury Middle School is planned for Monday, October 18 at 7:00 P.M. in Pirate Stadium.
Following area, Granbury will compete in at the BOA San Antonio Super Regional Championship on Saturday, November 6 at the Alamodome.
Music for the fall marching show includes “Mad World” by Roland Orzabal and first performed by Tears for Fears, “Paint It Black” by Mick Jagger and Keith Richard and performed by the Rolling Stones, “Requiem, Dies irae” by Giuseppe Verdi, “What the World Needs Now Is Love” by Burt Bacharach, “Pure Imagination” by Anthony Newley, “Kights of Cydonia” by Muse, and “Come Together” by the Beatles.
Alex Call, Maddie Purvis, and Katelyn Sukampo are the senior drum majors, joined by junior Saphyre Sneed. Also serving in band leadership positions are color guard captains Abigail LeBlanc and Katie Wren. For the Pirate Drumline, Carolina Garcia is battery captain and Sully Brown is pit captain.
The band is under the direction of Mark Eastin, Katelyn Johnson, Alan Olmos, and Tahlequah Kirk. Maggie Meroney is the colorguard instructor. Also supporting the high school program are AMS directors April Page and Stephanie Bosch and GMS directors Michele Kahne and Ben Holmes.
