GHS BAND COMPETES AT UIL AREA MARCHING CONTEST

October 27, 2021 

The GHS Pirate Band competed at the UIL area marching contest on October 23, 2021, at the Birdville ISD Fine Arts/Athletics Complex. 

Granbury finished twelfth in the field of 22 bands in Class 5A at the Saturday event. 

The band advanced to area after the “What the World Needs…” marching show received a Division I superior rating from all three judges at the region marching competition on October 12.  The marching ensemble also earned high marks at the Bands of America West Texas Regional Championship on October 2, advancing to finals in field of mostly Class 6A groups.  Granbury also competed at the Mansfield Preview of Champions on September 25. 

The Pirate Band will compete in at the BOA San Antonio Super Regional Championship on Saturday, November 6 at the Alamodome. 

Music for the fall marching show includes “Mad World” by Roland Orzabal and first performed by Tears for Fears, “Paint It Black” by Mick Jagger and Keith Richard and performed by the Rolling Stones, “Requiem, Dies irae” by Giuseppe Verdi, “What the World Needs Now Is Love” by Burt Bacharach, “Pure Imagination” by Anthony Newley, “Kights of Cydonia” by Muse, and “Come Together” by the Beatles. 

Alex Call, Maddie Purvis, and Katelyn Sukampo are the senior drum majors, joined by junior Saphyre Sneed.  Also serving in band leadership positions are color guard captains Abigail LeBlanc and Katie Wren.  For the Pirate Drumline, Carolina Garcia is battery captain and Sully Brown is pit captain. 

Section leaders are:  Lily Welch, flutes; Emily Juarez, clarinets; Caitlyn Jacobs, saxophones; Clayton Christy, low reeds; Darik Johnson, trumpets; McKenzie Hamilton, mellophones; Heri Tovar, trombones; Alek Mankowski, euphoniums; Luke Mankowski, tubas.  Drill captains are:  Lacy Criswell, Sydney Dennis, Anthony Garcia, Brendan Kesinger, Emily Lemens, Ben Nguyen, Madison Roman, Jarod Rosas, Ashley Sukampo. 

The band is under the direction of Mark Eastin, Katelyn Johnson, Alan Olmos, and Tahlequah Kirk. Maggie Meroney is the colorguard instructor. Also supporting the high school program are AMS directors April Page and Stephanie Bosch and GMS directors Michele Kahne and Ben Holmes.
