GISD TRUSTEES BEGIN SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH

May 8, 2018

Granbury ISD School Board

The Granbury ISD Board of Trustees moved forward with the search for a new superintendent during a special meeting on May 8, 2018.

Trustees authorized the superintendent vacancy immediately and accept applications through Friday, June 22.

The board set the minimum qualification requirements:

  • doctorate degree
  • 3 years experience as a superintendent, deputy superintendent, or assistant superintendent
  • active Texas superintendent certificate

An applicant review committee composed of board president Nancy Alana, Dr. Barbara Herrington, and Barbara Townsend will review all the applications received by prospective superintendent candidates.  The committee will report its findings to the full board during a special meeting on Tuesday, July 17 at 3:00 P.M.

The board hopes to have a new superintendent on the job on or before September 1, according to Herrington’s motion.

In addition to the superintendent search, trustees also reviewed a recent survey on school safety and security.  61% of respondents felt that GISD has taken sufficient steps to both prevent and protect schoolchildren in the event of an incident.  Still board members discussed the need to do more to improve campus security.

The results indicated the highest support with 84% for hiring additional law enforcement officers for every campus.  A School Marshal Program – which would allow some teachers and staff to be armed following training and licensing by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement – was also favored by 74% of survey respondents.  A smaller majority of 56% was supportive of the creation of a school district police department.  Fourth in the list of options was continuing to train staff and be diligent with other security measures.

Board members asked for the administration to develop cost estimates for both options and present them at the next meeting.  Depending on the financial implications, trustees will consider whether to include funding in the 2018-19 budget or possibly to seek a tax increase.

The board will next meet for its regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 21.  Board meetings are held in the GISD Administration Building at 217 N. Jones Street.
