GISD SCHOOL BOARD SWEARS IN NEWLY ELECTED TRUSTEES

Granbury ISD School Board

The Granbury ISD Board of Trustees swore in newly elected school board members during its regular monthly meeting on November 18, 2019. 

The board began by canvassing results from the November general election.  Trustees approved the results, with incumbents Mark Jackson and Barbara Townsend winning new term for Places 5 and 6 respectively.  Newcomer Bob Swearingen took Place 7.  All were elected to full three-year terms expiring in November 2022.

The board also reorganized with re-election of the existing slate of officers:  Mark Jackson, president; Barbara Townsend, vice president; Dr. Barbara Herrington, secretary. 

Granbury ISD Board of Trustees Swearing In

The board moved forward with three projects under a previously approved $5 million facility improvement allocation.  These include:  two “experience” classrooms for the forthcoming Emma Roberson Early Learning Academy for full-day pre-kindergarten to open next school year; two welded steel ground storage tanks; roof replacement of the James Wann Sports Center at Granbury High School. 

Trustees cast votes for board members of local county appraisal districts:  Hood County – one vote each for Mark Jackson, Donna Thompson, and Margo Walsh; Johnson County – all votes for Don Beeson; Parker County – all votes for Jerry Durant; Somervell – votes spread out among Nemo Britton, Brady Brown, Wade Busch, Lee Magee, and Bill Moore. 

Board members approved a memorandum of understanding with Pecan Valley Centers for Behavioral and Development Health Care to serve the center’s clients who are also GISD students during the school day and on campus. Times will be established so as not to interfere with students’ academic needs. 

In personnel, trustees approved the appointment of new teachers at Granbury High School and Granbury Middle School.  The board also received notification of two resignations effective at the end of the semester. 

Reports to the board included: 

  • Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Glenn updated board members on several upcoming events. With consultation with trustees, Dr. Glenn also scheduled a board workshop to review a demographic study on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 2:30 P.M.
  • Josh McLaughlin, Director of Texas Public Finance for BOK Financial, reviewed the district’s existing bonds and explained options for prepayment or refunding of existing debt in order to reduce future interest payments. The board will consider the proposals at a future meeting.
  • GISD transportation director Brian Caruthers reported on the department’s operations. He explained current goals in promoting safety, attracting and retaining bus drivers, maintaining and replacing the bus and white fleet vehicles, providing support for extracurricular and
  • Dobie Williams, assistant superintendent for finance and operations, presented financial statements, cash flow reports, and a categorical expenses report for October 2019.

The board also approved minutes from the last regular meeting and a special meeting and budget amendments.  Purchases were approved for the child nutrition program. 

Trustees also reviewed Policy Update 114 recommended by the Texas Association of School Boards; the local policy changes will be considered at a future meeting. 

Donations reported to the board included: $14,446 from the Acton Elementary PTO for the fifth grade field trip to Camp Grady Spruce; $250 from Riverside Homebuilders to STEAM Academy at Mambrino; $1,600 from the Mambrino PTO for water bottle filling stations; $2,261 from the Emma Roberson PTO for water bottle filling stations; $7,850 from Oak Woods PTO for a large fan in cafeteria. 

Trustees next convene for the regular monthly meeting on Monday, December 16. Board meetings are held in the GISD Board Room located in the Administration Building at 217 N. Jones Street.
