Oak Woods School dedicated a new outdoor learning center on May 30, 2013, in memory of a student who passed away earlier this year.
The Kyra Olson Outdoor Learning Center will be used to enhance science instruction for students, according to principal Donnie Cody. The center will expanded beginning this fall through a grant from the Granbury ISD Education Foundation, which awarded $2,000 for the school to create a garden and butterfly habitat to engage students in project-based learning across all subject areas with specific focus on science, math, and writing.
Olson, a second grader in Renee Hawthorne’s class at the school, passed away in January after fighting cancer.
Earlier this year, classmates of Kyra’s older sister, Loryn Hopper, at Acton Middle School helped collect can tabs for recycling to aid the Ronald McDonald House, which provided the family a place to stay during trips to the hospital for the younger girl’s chemotherapy treatments.
