RENDEIRO WINS BRONZE AT INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

Mariah Rendeiro, a graduate of Granbury High School, won bronze for her science fair project “Ironing Out Global Warming” at the 5th INESPO (The International Environment and Sustainability Olympiad) on June 2-7, 2013, in The Netherlands. 

The international competition was the culmination of a whirlwind year for the 2013 graduate. From the Granbury ISD district science fair in January 2012, the GHS student was among several to advance to the Fort Worth Regional Science Fair on and among a select group that went to the ExxonMobil Texas Science and Engineering Fair  that spring in San Antonio.

At the regional fair, Rendeiro won a trip to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair held in May 2012 in Pittsburgh. She was only the second Granbury student to attend the premier global science competition. 

In July, Rendeiro received a major award from the Walden Woods Project, an environmental organization founded by musician Don Henley. She was one of two students receiving the Environmental Leadership Award alongside former U.S. president Bill Clinton. 

For her follow-up project this past school year, the GHS student expanded on her research for a project entitled “A Second Year Study on the Effectiveness and Feasibility of Iron Fertilization of the Oceans Utilizing Iron Nitrate.” She won Best of Show honors at the district fair and, at the regional competition in February, received awards from the Fort Worth Audubon Society, Lockheed Martin, and U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps.

INESPO is an international Olympiad founded in 2009 for students aged 13-18 in order to bring attention to environmental problems, to bring consensus on social environmental values, and to eliminate environmental problems through education. For the competition, all projects involve the environmental and one of five categories: chemistry, physics, biology, geography, and social/civics.
