Leta Andrews, coach of the Lady Pirate Basketball team at Granbury High School, was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame during a ceremony held on June 12, 2010, in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The Hall of Fame’s Class of 2010 also included WNBA standouts and Olympians Rebecca Lobo, Teresa Edwards, and Teresa Weatherspoon as well as Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation President and CEO Gloria Ray.
This marks Andrew’s third hall of fame membership. In March 2008, Andrews was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame as only the third high school basketball coach to receive the distinction. She previously was selected for membership in the Texas High School Basketball Hall of Fame.
Andrews was honored in October 2009 with the Bayard H. Friedman HERO Award by Score A Goal In The Classroom school incentive program for being the most outstanding girls’ basketball coach in Texas. In March 2007, she was selected as inaugural recipient of the Morgan Wootten Lifetime Achievement Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Andrews also was selected the Most Outstanding American Teacher-Coach of the Year by the Walt Disney Company in 1993.
Having coached since 1962, Andrews holds the record for the most victories won by a girls’ high school basketball coach. Over her career, she has led teams to 1,328 wins and is close to breaking the record for the most wins by any high school basketball coach.
