Brawner Miler's ClubBrawner Intermediate School students have been running around the world.  Since October 2010, third, fourth, and fifth graders at the campus have run 27,100 miles.

“We set a goal to run enough miles to travel to every capital in the United States including Honolulu, Hawaii and Juneau, Alaska,” said physical education teacher Patty Phillips.  “But that wasn't enough, so we ran all the way around the Earth at the equator with miles to spare.”

Fourth grader Peyton Fletemeyer (pictured at left) was the top runner after completing 317 miles.

The Brawner PTO supplied medals for 282 students who ran at least fifty miles, and the Lake Granbury Kiwanis Club awarded t-shirts to 58 runners for completing one hundred miles.

“Brawner students believe ‘just keep moving’,” Phillips commented.  “Establishing this lifelong habit has kept our students motivated to improve their health and academic performance.”

This school exercise program motivated 83 participants on TEAM Brawner entering the Project Graduation 5K and Fun Run on April 30.

Throughout the school year, the students have been participating in Fuel Up to Play 60 – a school nutrition and physical activity program launched by the National Dairy Council and the National Football League in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The initiative encourages youth to consume nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) and achieve 60 minutes of physical activity every day.

In February, thanks to a sponsorship by Dairy MAX, the school hosted a pep rally featuring Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee, who encouraged students to eat nutritious meals, study hard, and “play 60.”  Since then, the PTO has been raising funds to replace a dirt track with one made of asphalt.
