The Granbury High School Pirate Band will begin preparation in July 2011 for the fall marching competition season – with the goal of making it to the Class 4A state marching contest.

“The students have put state marching contest at the top of their priority list for this coming fall,” said band director Mark Eastin, who is beginning his second year at GHS.  “The success we had last year has given our students some insight into what they are truly capable of and we plan to give a run to state our best shot.”

The preparations begin on Monday, July 25 with the percussion and colorguard camps.  Those groups will meet that entire week from 8:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M.

All band students will report for a fundamental marching and playing camp on Thursday, July 28 and Friday, July 29 from 8:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M.

Beginning Monday, August 1, the band will be in full summer band camp rehearsal every weekday through Thursday, August 18.  The students will meet 8:00 A.M.-5:00 P.M. each of those days.  The only exception is August 9-11, when the band will only hold evening rehearsals from 4:00-9:00 P.M.

Class 4A high schools are eligible to compete for a state marching band title in odd-numbered years.  The state competition will be held in the Alamodome in San Antonio during the first week in November.

“We must first qualify at the region level and then compete in the toughest area in the state as far as 4A marching bands go,” stated Eastin.  “Only the top three bands from the area qualify for state so it is very tough competition at that level.

This year’s show “A Child’s Garden of Dreams” will give the band an opportunity to compete both musically and visually with some of the top bands in Texas. “We have some of the hardest working kids I have ever seen and have no doubt they will represent Granbury and GISD in a championship manner,” Eastin said.

“We are looking forward to an exciting season and I think the kids are very excited about the possibilities and opportunities they will have this coming year,” commented Eastin.
