Granbury High School soccer teams excelled at the West Texas Invitational tournament held January 13-14, 2012, in Abilene.  The Pirates won the tourney championship, while the Lady Pirates placed second.

The boys earned their first-place finish with a 1-0 win over Abilene Cooper, after posting victories over San Angleo Lake View (2-1) and Brownwood (3-0).  In a tough defensive championship match versus the Cooper Cougars, the lone score came from GHS junior Erick Garcia.

"We can kind of see both sides of the story," Pirate coach Doug Kissinger said. "We got dominated the first half, but they didn't finish their opportunities and if you allow a team to stay in it, it can come back and bite you. We can see on our side that if we continue to work, fight and play our game plan, we'll get that one and finish, and we did."

In the girls division, the Lady Pirates bested both Lake View (2-1) and Cooper (3-2) before falling to Odessa Permian 1-3 in the title game.

"We played better than we did in our scrimmages, and this is a very tough tournament," commented Lady Pirate head coach David Winkleman.  "Coming out here and finishing second is an accomplishment."

In all, five players made the all-tournament team:  boys - Julio Moreno (most valuable player), Erick Garcia, Taylor Green; girls - Alex Grossman, Kelci Slaughter.
