GRANBURY ISD SCHOOL BOARD HOLDS JUNE MEETING
June 22, 2012
The Granbury ISD Board of Trustees met for its regular monthly meeting on June 18, 2012.
Student performance on the new State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) end of course exams was reviewed by assistant superintendent Carol Howard. The new state testing system took effect during the 2011-12 school year for students in ninth grade or in eighth grade and taking high school-level courses. For students who were not successful on all tests, GISD was proactive and is offering an EOC STAAR Camp at Crossland Ninth Grade Center to prepare students for retests scheduled for July.
Board members granted approval to the Touchdown Club, the football program’s booster organization, to begin construction of a wrought iron fence and a stone ticket booth at Pirate Stadium. The boosters will purchase materials and has volunteer labor to complete the project. The school district will not incur any expense other than electrical and painting needs.
Trustees called a regular election for Saturday, November 6 for Places 3 and 4 (full three-year terms) and Place 5 (a one-year unexpired term caused by the resignation of Charlie Cloud) on the school board. Board members also approved a contract with the Hood County Elections Administrator to conduct a joint election with municipalities and other local governmental entities. General information about the upcoming school board election is available on the district website at www.granburyisd.org/election.
The board heard a report regarding the district’s Community Schools Health Advisory Council. Topics included services provided by local charitable organizations, a lunch voucher program offered by the Hood County Children’s Charities Fund, a local wellness policy, procedures for students with communicable diseases, standing orders for campus nurses to follow, and head lice procedures. The council was also informed that the Texas Department of State Health Services will longer be able to immunize students covered by private insurance policies.
In personnel action, trustees approved the appointment of several new employees and were notified of resignations. Among the new appointments were new Granbury Middle School principal Pat Yelverton and new Mambrino School principal Dana Goode.
In other action:
- The board set meeting dates for the 2012-13 year.
- The investment report for May 2012 was reviewed by executive director of finance Sharay Boynton.
- Superintendent Ron Mayfield presented proposed changes to local district policy recommended by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB).
In addition to approving budget amendments as well as minutes from the last regular meeting, purchases and renewals approved were technology items; bus and automotive supplies, parts, and repair services; electrical supplies and equipment; general maintenance supplies and equipment; and athletic supplies for winter sports. Trustees also renewed radio broadcasting rights to KPIR for athletic activities; the agreement only provides exclusive use of the press box.
Budget amendments included several donations: $26,635 from the Acton Elementary PTO to purchase SMART Boards and document cameras; $4,217 from the Oak Woods PTO for a new sidewalk at the campus as well as additional equipment for the Weatherbug project; $3,156 from the Mambrino PTO for technology equipment and supplies as well as to supplement student travel; and $19,404 from the Granbury ISD Education Foundation for several innovative teaching and campus projects.
The board will next meet on Tuesday, July 17 for the annual budget workshop and Monday, July 23 for its regular monthly meeting. Board meetings are held in the GISD Board Room located next to the Administration Building at 600 W. Pearl Street.
