GHS CHOIR TOURS ITALY WITH CONCERTS, VISITS TO HISTORIC LANDMARKS

June 25, 2012

The Granbury High School choir toured Italy on June 12-21, 2012, with concerts and sightseeing in Venice, Pisa, Florence, and Rome.

Students got off to a quick start with a solo concert at Chiesa di San Moise, a Catholic basilica in Venice, after enjoying a tour of the celebrated city, a demonstration of Murano glassblowing, and rides on the famed gondolas.

The group also performed twice during the ten-day trip with a combined chorus under the direction of Dr. Karen Kennedy, director of choral studies at the University of Miami – first singing mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican City and then at a gala concert at Basilica dei Santi Apostoli (the Church of the Twelve Holy Apostles), which is thought to be the resting place for the remains of the apostles Philip and James the Younger.  The GHS ensemble also performed their own songs at the latter venue.

Historic landmarks and other notable places visited included: Venice – Grand Canal, The Doge’s Palace, Piazza San Marco; Pisa – Leaning Tower of Pisa, Duomo cathedral, Baptistry; Florence – Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze (home to Michelangelo’s David), Santa Maria del Fiore (The Duomo), Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria; Rome – Colosseum, Arch of Constantine, Roman ruins and aqueducts, Saint Peter in Chains basilica, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Square, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Novana.

Students making the trip were Blake Bergeman, Christian Carvajal, Brent Condit, Katie Fee, Ally Gonzalez, Katrice Johnson, Connor Krebbs, Erica McCreight, P.J.
