GRANBURY HIGH SCHOOL SOPHOMORE SELECTED FOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM

May 29, 2008

Hillary CowdenHillary Cowden, a sophomore at Granbury High School, was recently selected as an alternate to the 2008 World Leadership Congress of the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program.

The conference will be held July 25-August 2, 2008, in Washington, D.C.  Cowden will join four hundred students in exploring and debating what best exemplifies the qualities of a leader.

Cowden recently attended the HOBY North Texas seminar held May 15-18, 2008, on the campus of Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

Hugh O’Brian, who portrayed legendary lawman Wyatt Earp in a 1950’s television series, started the leadership program in 1958 following a visit with Dr. Albert Schweitzer.  After nine days of working alongside Schweitzer in a medical clinic without electricity and running water in the African jungle, O’Brian received a charge from the humanitarian:  to help teach young people to think for themselves.

Each year, thousands of high school sophomores attend regional HOBY conferences that motivate and empower the students to make a positive difference within the global society through understanding and action based on effective and compassionate leadership.  Only a few of those participants are selected to attend the World Leadership Congress.
