In early May, the students held a food drive and cell phone drive to benefit Mission Granbury, which is a local charitable organization that provides aid to underprivileged families and to victims of domestic violence. The drives collected over eight hundred canned food items and dozens of old cell phones, batteries, and chargers. The old phones will allow women to call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.
In the third week, students gathered new and gently used teddy bears. The stuffed animals will be given to children in difficult situations. The bears will be distributed by local fire departments, women's shelters, the Children’s Advocacy Center, and Mission Granbury.
A unique fundraising competition was held in the final week. Teachers competed for the honor to kiss a pig, and students and others voted by donating money in each teacher’s jar. After the amounts were tallied, French and German teacher Bernie Barron won the contest. The proceeds will be donated to Mrs. Barron’s designated charity that provides scholarships to children afflicted by Rasmussen’s Encephalitis. Above, Mrs. Barron prepares to kiss the elusive pig.
