Coach Leta Andrews tied the all-time win record for a high school basketball when the Lady Pirates defeated Denton Guyer 53-44 in their first game at the 2010 Fort Worth ISD Cowtown Classic.
Having coached since 1962, Andrews has posted 1,333 wins – the same mark achieved by former Fort Worth Dunbar coach Robert Hughes.
Breaking the record, though, proved elusive as the Lady Pirates fell in the next three games against Cedar Hill, Liberty Christian, and Alvin Manvel. Each of those matches was close, and the Cedar Hill game came down to the buzzer. Winning one of these games would have been symbolic, given that the court at the Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center is named in honor of Hughes.
